Founded in January 1849, the American Mutual Insurance Association is the oldest mutual insurance association in Iowa. Initially named Deutsche Brund Gilde (German Fire Association), it was established by thirteen immigrant farmers in Scott County who united to pool their resources and share their losses.
In 1946, the Association adopted its current name, American Mutual Insurance Association. By 1994, it had evolved into a Statewide Property Mutual, chartered under section 518A of the Iowa Code. Today, American Mutual markets its policies in 28 counties across Iowa, operating its own agency in Eldridge and being represented by independent agencies in the authorized counties, continuing its tradition of community-focused service.
From these humble beginnings, American Mutual has grown and prospered, steadfastly adhering to the principle of neighbor helping neighbor. Conservative values and prudent underwriting practices have enabled the Association to provide sound protection at affordable prices for its policyholders.
